'Dear All, just got back from skiing in La Grave, 5 days off piste with the boys, fantastic. However, having summited Vinson on my return i had managed to tear the ligaments in my ankle by falling down stairs and wreck my back skiing off a cliff, so i think it's back to the mountains for my own personal safety, which is the reason i have booked with AC to do Cho Oyu in September this year as preparation for an Everest attempt in 2011....... watch this space guys.

Seven Summits Challenge

Raising money for
St Oswald's Hospice Limited
Charity Registration No. 503386

So far this has been a very personal challenge, but for this trip I’ve decided to raise funds for the children’s service at St Oswald’s Hospice.  This wonderful charity offers specialist short breaks for North East children who have progressive life shortening conditions. They make a massive difference to the kids and their families.
Welcome to my blog.
Last year I set myself a challenge – I decided I would attempt to climb the 7 highest peaks on each of the 7 continents.  To date I’ve tackled Europe’s Mount Elbus, Aconcagua in South America and Kilimanjaro in Africa as well as summiting Mont Blanc in western Europe.

Dear All,  I have just arrived back after a 38hr journey from minus 15 at Vinson base camp (VBC) to a snowy Newcastle and minus 5, positively tropical.  I am pleased to report to everybody that is following my blog, but especially to everybody that has been kind enought to sponsor St. Oswalds Hospice that the climb was a roaring success.  Vinson is one of the most beautiful, remote and hostile places in the world, however she did us the great courtesy of lifting her skirts and allowing us total access!  The climb was incredibly physical and demanding and i pleased to report the majority of the tean succeeded and i would like to extend an extra special thank you to Dean Staples (our guide) and all the team at Adventure Consultants who supported us.  I would also like to pass on my commiserations ti Hazel Nash, one of the toughest and nicest Kiwi ladies in the world, who unfortunately suffered severe frost bite and was unable to complete the climb.  However on a brighter note, mission accomplished and now onto higher and higher things

Subject: Hi everybody,not long now!

Hi everybody, not long now! I leave a snowy Newcastle on December the 27th arriving in Punta Arenas midday on the 28th and weather permitting press on to Patriot Hills,Antarctica for New Years eve. I have all the necessary kit including a sleeping bag with a -40 comfort rating and I am feeling fit(although the twelve days of Christmas may knock the edge off this).

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their kind support and sponsorship and will take great delight in coming back to celebrate the New Year with all of you.

Please follow my dispatches on the Adventure Consultants web site.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you all, John.

At 4897m Vinson is a huge mountain but this time one of the biggest challenges will be the extreme cold.  Temperatures in Antarctica can drop as low as -90 F but I’ve been told to expect a positively balmy -40 F during my expedition!
